English requirements are now assessed for each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) for most visas, and the overall band score is no longer sufficient.

The One Skill Retake is available across Australia for computer-delivered tests. If you miss the target score in one skill, you can retake only that section within 60 days. This is especially helpful for migration and permanent resident (PR) applicants.
Updates to IELTS Testing from 28 June 2026
Computer-delivered IELTS will be the preferred method, with all traditional paper-based IELTS tests in Australia being phased out as of 28 June 2026. The test format hasn’t changed, but you can now expect faster results and flexible booking options.
Some selected markets will offer a “writing on paper” hybrid option, which allows you to type the listening and reading test and handwrite the writing.
You need to complete all four skills within 2 hours 45 minutes.
Listening (30 minutes) 4 audio recordings, answering 40 questions
Reading (60 minutes) 40 questions testing a range of skills, including comprehension and writers’ opinions.
Writing (60 minutes) Involves 2 Tasks. Academic task 1: Describe a visual chart/graph. General task 1: Write a letter. Task 2 for both is the same: write an essay.
Speaking (11-14 minutes) Face-to-face interview with an examiner
Prepare for success
Check your current skills level by taking a full official practice test (from the British Council, IDP, or Cambridge) to determine which band scores you get.
Set a realistic migration target aiming for 7.0 or more in each skill for Proficient English and additional migration points
Study 1-2 hours per day, focusing on each skill. Switch between practice and doing mock full tests, and spend extra time on your weakest skill
Listening
- Practice with British, Australian and American accents
- Pay close attention to spelling, numbers and dates
- Use official Cambridge IELTS books 18 to 20
Reading
- Academic: Practice reading quickly and understanding the meaning of longer texts.
- General Training: Focus on workplace and everyday English materials
- Develop skimming, scanning and keyword-matching skills
Writing
- Task 1: Learn how to describe visible data clearly (charts, graphs, diagrams)
- Task 2: Formal essay writing discussing a statement about a contemporary issue using relevant examples
- Seek feedback from a qualified teacher or experienced IELTS trainer
Speaking
- Speak naturally and avoid rehearsed, robotic answers
- Record yourself and compare with high-scoring sample responses
- Practice Part 2 longer answers and Part 3 discussion questions every day
