The Australian Red Cross will receive Government funding for the next six months to support temporary visa holders in need.
In a statement released this week, the organisation said it has not yet received the funding and will provide further details once proper arrangements are in place.
The Red Cross said it will use the money to bolster its Emergency Relief and Safety Net Program.
The news comes after the Government last week denied temporary visa holders access to its new JobKeeper wages subsidy.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for support, you must:
– Be in Australia on a temporary visa
– Be experiencing financial hardship
– Cannot access Centrelink, Medicare or other support services
– Have no savings, income of other forms of financial support (such as help from family and friends)
How will support be distributed?
The Red Cross will prioritise people in need of urgent help, such as migrants with disabilities and young children, and those in harm’s way. People who are vulnerable to Coronavirus will also be prioritised, along with those suffering from physical and mental health issues.
The funds will be used to cover costs such as food, emergency payments and crisis accommodation.
