Short-term Occupation List – Addressing Immediate Skill Gaps

The Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) includes occupations experiencing temporary or medium-term shortages in Australia. It supports quicker workforce solutions without creating an automatic pathway to permanent residency. The STSOL is based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) and currently includes around 215 occupations that may be relevant for visas, such as Skilled Nomination (subclass 190), Training Visa (subclass 407) and certain Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491) options.

Compared with the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), the STSOL generally offers less direct access to independent Permanent Residency (PR) but potential PR pathways via state or territory nomination and/or employer sponsorship, depending on current policy settings. Some examples include Ambulance Officer (ANZSCO 411111) or Geologist (ANZSCO 234411)

The STSOL and related skilled occupation lists are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect Australia’s evolving labour market needs and government policy. Always refer to the Department of Home Affairs’ combined lists for the most up-to-date information on eligible occupations and visa settings.
