Overview

To be eligible for the 190 visa you must meet the point score. You earn points through your age, English competency, qualification and skilled work experience. You also get points from the state. You must:

  • Be able to obtain a positive skill assessment in an occupation on the 190 list
  • Meet the requirement of one or more states or territories
  • Be accepted for nomination by state or territory
  • Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect
  • Be under 45 years of age
  • Receive an invitation to apply
  • Meet health and character requirements

Obtaining state sponsorship

Each state has its own requirements. Some may be lacking skilled workers in a particular trade and you may have a better chance of gaining residency if you choose your destination carefully. Occupation lists change frequently, so it’s important to keep your finger on the pulse of Australia’s needs, or work with a Registered Migration Agent who can assist you in preparing a successful application.

It may also be the case that one state requires a higher English test score than the next, whilst another requires a job offer from an employer or evidence of substantial settlement funds – so it’s important to weigh up your options.

What is a skill assessment?

Depending on which authority you’re dealing with, the skill assessment can be complex. There is no room for error. You may be required to provide documents of your training as well as detailed reports and references from the duration of your career. A Registered Migration Agent can assist you with this part of the application to ensure that you have a strong case.

Expression of interest

Once you hold a positive skill assessment, you’ll need to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI). You must be sure that all points you claim in your EOI can be verified when you are invited to apply. Once your EOI is submitted, you join the pool of other hopefuls. You then seek out nomination from the relevant state. Once invited, you have to be ready to move fast – some states require you to take up the offer and lodge your state nomination within 14 days. If you are approved, you will be invited to apply for the 190 visa and you’ll have 60 days to do so.
