485 Visa: Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

If you hold a student visa and have recently completed (or will soon complete) an Australian course of study, you may be eligible for a temporary graduate visa, otherwise known as a 485 visa.

This visa has two streams – the Post-Vocational Educational Work Stream and the Post-Higher Education Work Stream.

The stream you apply for is determined by the qualification you use to meet the Australian Study Requirement.

Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

If you have an associate degree, diploma or trade qualification, you should apply via the Post-Vocational Education Work Stream.

Your qualification should be closely related to your occupation on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List.

Applicants must be aged 35 and under, expect for passport holders from Britain and Hong Kong who can be up to 50 years old.

For most applicants, this visa subclass is valid for 18 months from grant; however, British and Hong Kong passport holders may be eligible to stay for up to five years.

Post-Higher Education Work Stream

Applicants for this stream must be 35 or under, except passport holders from Hong Kong and the UK who can be up to 50 years of age if they are meeting the Australian Study Requirement using a Masters (research) or Doctoral Degree (PhD).

Stay periods for most applicants are as follows:

  • Bachelor degree (including honours) – up to 2 years
  • Masters (coursework and extended) – up to 2 years
  • Masters (research) and doctoral degree (PhD) – up to 3 years

Applicants from the UK and Hong Kong may be eligible to stay for up to five years.

Stay periods for Indian nationals, under the the Australia India – Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), remain as follows:

  • Bachelor degree (including honours) – up to 2 years
  • Bachelor degree (with first class honours in STEM, including ICT) – up to 3 years
  • Masters (coursework, extended and research) – up to 3 years
  • Doctoral degrees (PhD) – up to 4 years
